The Historic Dock Street Theatre$20 Million Renovation Underway
The Dock Street Theatre is currently closed for Renovations. Charleston Stage plans to return to the Dock Street when it reopens in May 2010 The Historic Dock Street Theatre, home to Charleston Stage for the past 30 years, is undergoing a $20 million restoration by the City of Charleston. Renovations will provide new seats, restrooms and lobby facilties and state-of-the-art lighting to this historic structure. Three elevators are being added to make the buidling completely hanicapped accessible. Stabilization includes insuring that the structure is earthquake resistant. The Historic Dock Street Theatre, built within the shell of the Planters Hotel (circa 1800), is built on the site of the original Dock Street Theatre, first theatre building in America.
